One of Japan’s largest full-fledged eSports parks opened in Tokyo Tower Foot Town, located directly under Tokyo Tower. Under the facility’s concept of “Game Changer,” the park is an entertainment venue pursuing a new dimensional space packed with fun across numerous scenarios, where, among other activities, visitors can play the latest game titles and enjoy tournaments and events in a stadium equipped with the world’s latest XR technology.

Based on the concept of “Inside, Tokyo Tower,” we aimed to create an interior space that is an evolution of Tokyo Tower, the symbol of Tokyo.

Tokyo Tower is a Tokyo landmark with a long history and continues to be a popular tourist attraction to this day. The concept was to create a space that expresses the powerful vibrancy that continues to exist for this Tokyo landmark and its long-loved allure.  

We leveraged the fact that it is an old structure built many years ago and paid attention to preserving the old taste and expression of the materials. To the extent possible, we sought to highlight the goodness of the original Tokyo Tower by presenting it as it is without overdesigning the overall space. Wanting to present the strength of Tokyo Tower’s intricately entwined iron framing and structure, we chose to show the metal, mortar, and steel framing that comprises the building without hiding it, creating a space that portrays strength while giving the impression that the Tower itself is encroaching into the interior. With this inorganic and achromatic space as a base, we could emphasize technology, such as cutting-edge content and LED visual effects, to an even greater degree. At the same time, we were also able to accentuate the theme color, “RED°,” which is also the park’s name, to create an extraordinary near-future space that people have never experienced before. 

As a source of new game culture and embedding the message “from Tokyo Tower to Japan, and from Japan to the world,” modern design expressions and smart devices facilitate design and content that evokes a Japanese feel, disseminating the feeling of “Next Japan” throughout the facility. Digital elements and technology are paired with traditional Japanese style motifs such as Shinto shrine archways and Noren (split curtains hung at shop entrances) to welcome visitors at the entrance. Additionally, uniquely Japanese content, such as vendors, kiosks, and capsule toy vending machines, provide a totally new shopping experience. Via these components, we are trying to provide visitors with a sense of “Next Japan” through an imaginative and awe-inspiring atmosphere in various situations.    

The space has been finished in a manner intended to stimulate the digital native generation and the highly fashion-conscious. It is an entertainment space where game lovers, and others unfamiliar with games, can experience great surprise and excitement. Essentially, we have created an advanced “new playground for Japan” where the real and digital worlds are blended in perfect synchronization.
