K11’s First Immersive Digital Exhibition on Craftsmanship Voyage de Savoir-Faire

K11 Craft & Guild Foundation (KCG), a registered charity of arts and culture in Hong Kong, proudly curates its first immersive digital exhibition Voyage de Savior-Faire at the Shanghai chi K11 art museum from 9 September to 13 November 2022. OUTPUT completes the full planning of digital space, digital projection and digital screen content in the exhibition. The exhibition employs a traditional oriental way of viewing art – “Imaginary Touring”, which invites audience to experience the important period in which Chinoiserie was fascinated in Europe and its impacts on European arts and culture appreciation. Accompany with contemporary digital images, the exhibition features 14 sets of precious gilt-decorated black lacquer antiquities collected by the Foundation, reconstructing the golden era of craftsmanship for visitors to wander around. Through digital images and a wide arrays of immersive and interactive experiences in the five exhibition areas, fellow “wanderers” can immerse into the imaginative world of gilt-decorated black lacquer and embark on a cultural journey across time, exploring the collision and far-reaching influence of Chinese craft culture on the rest of the world.

Divided into five parts, the exhibition begins with Dérive where Adrian Cheng, Founder of the K11 Craft & Guild Foundation, guides the audience back to the late 17th century for the legendary stories of the Chinese traditional craftsmanship – gilt-decorated black lacquer, starting the journey of exploration on how Chinoiserie fascinated Europe.

The dream then starts in the second section Voyage with the introduction of the shipping development and the prosperous world of Kangxi and Louis XIV through digital screens and modern technology. New voyage routes connected Chinese and Europe continents, which made Chinoiserie a fascinating trend in the West.

Wandering around the space, the Rêve creates an immersive and multi-sensory experience for the audience. It illustrates the exquisite craftsmanship of gilt-decorated black lacquer and presents the oriental aesthetic in an enchanted way. The essence of “imaginary touring” is reimagined through the experience of sitting and lying in the enchanting space.

Travelling back to modern times, the Savoir-faire highlights conservation and rejuvenation. Not only does it showcase precious lacquerware antiquities for appreciation, but it also includes interactive devices illustrating the creation process of gilt-decorated black lacquer which favour the tech-savvy Generation Z.

Au-delà du Rêve shows how the Chinese crafts are extended in the modern context. At the end of the journey, two sets of contemporary gilt-decorated black lacquer artworks by Weng Jijun and Vincent Cazeneuve, together with a set of digital art by Obvious Art, demonstrate the application and revival of the gilt-decorations.

Though the dream connecting Chinese and Western cultures ends, Chinese craftsmanship is still under conservation and rejuvenation. The story of gilt-decorated black lacquer will continue with the support of KCG, contemporary artists and everyone who are passionate about Chinese craftsmanship. By preserving the unique Chinese craftsmanship and oriental aesthetic, the story of 'Chinese is Cool' will remain on the world’s stage.
