HOTEL METROPOLITAN TOKYO HANEDA Designed by NIKKEN SPACE DESIGN LTD (Japan)
A Journey-Enhancing Destination
-Unveiling Local Charms with Surprises and Comfort-
HOTEL METROPOLITAN TOKYO HANEDA, strategically located on the former runway site of Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport), offers a unique vantage point as the world-renowned gateway to Japan. This unparalleled location allows guests to immerse themselves in the vibrant activity of the airport, transforming the hotel from a simple transit point to a destination in its own right. Our aim was to enhance this experience by creating an interior that adds value, inviting guests to view the hotel as more than just a place to stay before or after a flight.
Adopting the “perch” concept in our floor plan, we encourage guests to take a pause from their travels, akin to a bird resting its wings, and retreat into a space where they can enjoy the airport’s lively view. The restaurant and bar area, with its flexible seating arrangements, caters to a myriad of occasions, while THE ROOF TOP entices guests with its spectacular 360 degreeview, available both during the day and night. These perch-like spaces invite guests to find their own comfortable spot to enjoy their stay.
The design concept of “Airport-Like and Bar-Like” reflects our efforts to not only appeal to airport users but also to attract a broader audience by emphasizing the hotel’s unique features. We have integrated airport-like elements throughout the hotel, such as iconic runway-inspired corridors and chic aviation details, to ensure guests immediately recognize its airport hotel essence. Additionally, the industrial vibe and history of the surrounding area, one of Japan’s foremost factory districts, are captured in the artwork. Our original signage, influenced by aviation fonts and runway markings, adds a playful touch to attract aviation enthusiasts. In the guest rooms, bar-like high counters positioned at large windows allow guests to observe the planes as they land, take off, or taxi, creating a captivating show against the changing skies and neon runway lights. The bedside control panel, featuring a reading light and toggle switches, evokes the details of an aircraft cockpit. Furniture designed with a streamlined aircraft motif and custom-ordered lighting akin to Rapid Exit Taxiway Indicator Light (RTIL) add a touch of elegance and thematic consistency.
Artworks displayed in the hotel draw inspiration from actual aircraft parts and route maps, with some pieces reimagined from industrial products manufactured in the local area. The hotel also hosts occasional aviation-related exhibitions in collaboration with Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. to highlight the attractiveness of the area.
