In the city of Fuji, the historical Shin-Fuji High-speed rail station and its commercial area are revived in this project. Using Fuji-Hinoki, local pine lumber for floors, walls and furniture, we designed the seating area that is essentially wide stairs. A large staircase in the center of the lobby provides the public with a seating place with clarity. We wanted people to see the stairs from outside, as it acts as an indicator that there is easy access to the second floor, and gains traffic to businesses. The nature of high-speed rail is that there is a long waiting time for the train; hence we created many spaces visitors can dwell and pass time comfortably. They may choose to check the tourist information and browse one of many travel brochures in the public area or use their laptop at a café, which we also designed in the same building.
As part of the national epidemic, as the local demographic shift to elder majorities, the commercial area around the suburban station is also becoming spread-out and lacking livelihood. The biggest local social issue would be that in the course of 20 years or so, the population has declined and therefore the small businesses that were open surrounding the station have slowly faded, leaving scattered businesses that are still open, and pockets of commercial spots in the neighbourhood. With support from the city, we designed to consolidate the city and to make Fuji a better destination for travellers as well. To improve functionality and circulation, the city is aiming to realize the concept “Compact City”- a lively community revolving around the station. The area is experiencing a decline in population, hence the key is to “Compact” the city, instead of expanding. In this project in Fuji, the renewed
Shin-Fuji High-speed rail station needs to act as the key to improve the functionality and circulation of the entire city. With anticipation and support to promote the city of Fuji, the new facility provides unprecedented convenience and leads to the improvement of lives in Fuji.
Japan is dealing with an ageing society like no other. At such a high level of importance and urgency, we designers should be more active, and tirelessly explore the right direction in our designs. Japan already has fully established infrastructure and developed transportation as such, but it may not be realistic to maintain and benefit from, due to population decline. we believe many problems can be solved by design. In the future, other countries might be able to integrate good design and technology for an ageing society with a standard set by Japan.
Designers are the link for how people live, and we must always be paying attention to new values that arise.
